Landlord and tenancy law for tenants


Tenants are protected by a range of landlord and tenancy laws. It is important to remember, however, that these laws set out not only the rights than tenants have, but also their obligations: the law of landlord and tenancy is very much characterised by corresponding rights and obligations.

Both parties must adhere to the tenancy agreement, including notice periods and regulation of termination and eviction. Tenants’ security of tenure is, however, protected over and above a landlord’s economic interests, and consequently tenants can have recourse to statutory protections in many circumstances.
