Should you use cheap solicitors?

It can be attractive to use the services of what appear to be cheap solicitors. Sometimes this may be a good option, but there are other options you should consider also.

How much should you spend?

It is up to you to decide how much you wish to spend on a solicitor. Of course the cost will vary depending on whether you are after cheap solicitors in London or cheap solicitors elsewhere in the UK. And, it depends whether you want a specialist solicitor or a generalist high-street solicitor.

You may require help but only want to pay the minimum possible for cheap solicitors; this may be suitable for straightforward legal transactions. But, for complex matters, it may be worth taking a step up from cheap solicitors and paying for the experience and expertise that a more expensive solicitor may be able to offer.

For example, more expensive solicitors may get the work done in half the time and get it right, which means you end up paying the same or less as you would have for cheap solicitors. But, it all depends on your particular legal problem.

Using recommended solicitors

Using cheap solicitors doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing on quality. All solicitors that Contact Law recommends are chosen for their commitment to quality customer service. Contact Law has over 5,000 solicitors across the UK on its network, including cheap solicitors in London and elsewhere.

We can find the best solicitor for you based on your preferences. So, whether you want cheap solicitors in London or in a smaller town or suburb, we can find someone right for you.

All solicitors working in the UK must be accredited by the Law Society and hold a current practising certificate. Solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and the Law Society. As such, they are bound by the Solicitors Code of Conduct. Consequently, the solicitor you use should deliver a high level of service to you or your business.

Funding options

As well as looking for cheap solicitors, you may consider other funding options.

No-win, no-fee solicitors are a great option. For the right type of case, your solicitor will carry out your case without charging you anything, and only claiming their costs from the other side if you win.

Getting legal help

Ultimately, it is up to you how you choose your solicitor. You may wish to instruct a solicitor who is close to you for ease of access. You may wish to instruct a renowned firm of solicitors with great experience in the area of law you require, or you may wish to instruct a cheap solicitor who can simply get the job done.

Keeping the costs down

By discussing how much your solicitor's fees are and what the relevant costs will be, you have taken the necessary first step to help you control your legal expenses. Still, there are a few things you can do to help you and your solicitor manage the overall fees and costs:

  • Be organised: During your initial interviews, bring as much relevant information as possible and share it with your solicitor. You should think about the case in advance before talking to a solicitor. Write down the questions that you want your solicitor to answer. This could help cut down the time that the solicitor will spend investigating the case and gathering information
  • Be thorough: Tell your solicitor all the facts. You should not assume that your solicitor knows them all. Your solicitor should tell you that all your information will be kept in confidence. In order to represent you efficiently, it will help your solicitor to know as much as possible about your case and to avoid surprises during the course of the matter
  • Be efficient: Try to be as concise as possible. In many circumstances you will pay for every minute you spend with your solicitor. A friendly relationship can facilitate the handling of your case, but you should try to limit your discussions to your legal matter. You will not want to pay for a long, friendly conversation about non-legal matters!
  • Communicate: You need to discuss the case with your solicitor and prepare for meetings. You are probably the primary source of information about your case. If something new happens, you should inform your solicitor. It may change what the solicitor is doing on the case and save you and the solicitor time (and money)
  • Examine your bill: Make sure that your bills do not contain costs or expenses beyond those you agreed to pay for.
