Equity release

Equity release is a financial product that allows a homeowner to 'release' the equity in their home in the form of income, a lump sum or as a mixture of both, whilst retaining ownership of the property. The money will, of course, have to be paid back to the lender at some point in time, usually after your death.

If you are considering equity release your home is probably the most significant asset you have. It is therefore imperative that you enter any agreement with full understanding of the financial and legal consequences.

In this section we have set out some general information about equity release including:

  • How equity release affects your assets
  • Different equity release products and schemes
  • How to compare equity release companies
  • How a solicitor can help you if you are considering entering into an equity release scheme
